Judith Hedley is a retired secondary school teacher with more than ten years recent experience in adult learning. Her main subject is English Literature - with a particular interest in Jane Austen - but her talks also include social history and the history of food.
What did the hero of ‘Pride and Prejudice’ eat and drink? This light-hearted glimpse of Regency cuisine looks at the typical mealtimes and menus of his creator Jane Austen, the diets of those lower down the social scale, and the man himself at his Derbyshire mansion, Pemberley. You may not be tempted by the idea of White Soup or Calf’s Head Surprise, but the differences between eating then and now will provide us all with food for thought.
